Project description

So we’d like to implement Breton in online translators to develop its use and ensure worldwide visibility for our language.

The Breton language is lagging behind. Innovative in terms of digital identity, Brittany is the only region with an Internet extension that is not included in Google Translate, unlike its European counterparts (.eus, .cat, .corsica, .frl, .scot, .gal, .cymru/.wales). Europe’s most dynamic regional languages are already present: Basque, Catalan, Corsican, Friesian, Gaelic, Galician and Welsh.

There are many online translators: Google Translate, Yandex Translate, Microsoft / Bing / Azure, Amazon Translate, Itranslate, Apertium, Watson Language Translator / IBM
Babylon, DeepL, Systran, Reverso, etc.

The Google Translate participative translation tool, now used by 500 million users, is the market leader in online translators. With its freemium model (unlike some other paid translators), Google Translate appears to be the target of choice.

Objectives

• assemble corpora of fr-br text to facilitate the training of different robots (online translators use artificial intelligence to feed their translation systems)
• lobbying translators and platforms
